Martinmas

Today is Martinmas.

Today, we remember Saint Martin of Tours, a soldier, a monk, and a generous and kind man (or so the story goes), who was executed on that date in the year 397.

In Scotland, landlords collected rent on that date, and people marked the beginning of winter — six weeks before the winter solstice.

PS There be a wee bit of Scottish blood running in my veins.
